Construction continues on the Brenner Tunnel, a 64-kilometer underground rail tunnel between Innsbruck, Austria, and Fortezza, Italy. The tunnel will run through the Brenner Pass, below the main Alpine range, and will be the world's longest underground rail link upon its completion, scheduled for 2032. The Brenner Tunnel aims to improve freight and passenger transport in Europe by reducing travel time, CO2 emissions and road traffic. The tunnel is funded in part by the European Union, which considers it a priority for the development of the trans-European transport network. To date, 163 km of tunnels have been excavated out of a total of 230 km. The construction of this infrastructure will shorten travel times by nearly 70 percent, reducing them from the current 80 minutes to just 25. Thanks to the elimination of steep inclines, trains will be able to reach speeds in excess of 200 km/h, and it will be possible to run longer, heavier freight trains in greater numbers. This represents a real revolution for European mobility and transportation.
