The Italian court system has concentrated its attention on environmental crimes in the Piedmont region, particularly in its capital, Turin. The trial of public managers is scheduled for June 18 in Turin, and the accused include former mayors Piero Fassino and Chiara Appendino, as well as Sergio Chiamparino, the former president of the Piedmont Region, who is charged with negligent environmental pollution. The prosecutors Gianfranco Colace and Vincenzo Pacileo, who ordered the direct summons to trial, contest the offense of exceeding the limits set by the law, both qualitatively and quantitatively, for a greater number of days than those provided by the law for the years 2015 to 2019. According to prosecutors, public agencies have environmental competence and are expected to take all necessary precautions to prevent pollution, particularly in difficult orographic and geographical conditions. The focus is now shifting to the trial and potential statements by public officials.
