A failed arithmetic test set off a chain of events that came dangerously near to tragedy. The low mark, a 2, received on February 17 by a 14-year-old Ancona student, triggered an outpouring of negative feelings in the child and abruptly ended his will to life. Feeling humiliated, the boy threw himself out the school window while the teacher was conversing with other students. Fortunately, his fall from the third floor was softened by the lush, damp grass. According to reports, before performing this irresponsible gesture, the student took out his notepad and wrote a few words of farewell to those he loved. The negative judgment he received hurt him, and the possibility of revealing it to his parents added to his excessive behavior. That mark was seen as an agonizing failure, a burden too heavy to bear. Students and instructors were in tears when the youngster was first treated and transferred to the hospital. Despite many fractures, the youngster appears to be safe, according to the medical bulletin. The authorities interviewed both the math teacher and the headmistress. In addition, the carabinieri confiscated the boy's phone and notepad.
