We expected the worst when a sinkhole formed in the center of Naples, in the Vomero neighborhood, swallowing two automobiles. The vehicles, one stopped and one in movement, sank along with a tree. The occupants, who were rescued by a few soldiers following the commotion, sustained minor injuries. At that point, the authorities' attention was drawn to the possibility of ground subsidence, so they decided, as a precaution, to evacuate 20 families living in an adjacent building. According to reports, the chasm opened around five p.m. Based on the initial reconstructions, it appears that the sewer has collapsed, and the loading water pipe is broken. In addition to evacuating the building, numerous ground-floor units were flooded. Investigations have commenced, with the Naples Public Prosecutor's Office coordinating the effort and Naples Municipal Police agents carrying it out. The Neapolitan Public Prosecutor's Office is initiating a case on the incident.
