The Defense Committee of the Chamber of Deputies approved the purchase of German Leopard 2 tanks. This is a critical vote because it will enable the start of a massive multi-year program of renewal of the Army's armored component, which is required due to the obsolescence of the systems currently in service and the new NATO requirements imposed by recent developments in the international scenario. The Leopard 2 acquisition program is projected to span a period of fourteen years, or until 2037. It is divided into two distinct phases: substantial preparation will occur during the first phase (2024-2026), followed by the actual acquisition of 132 Leopard 2 tanks (2027-2037) to equip two tank regiments and up to 140 derived armored platforms to supply the heavy, medium, and light brigades, as well as all engineer and logistic regiments. The entire cost is estimated at 8 billion and 246 million euros.
