Last year, the number of Italians enrolled in a gym was 5.5 million, 8.3% of the resident population, a flow of sportsmen and women that allowed the 5,100 fitness facilities in Italy to have a turnover of 2.3 billion euros. As with most entrepreneurial activities in Italy, the gym sector is mainly made up of small and medium-sized businesses; Precisely 57% are small and medium-sized fitness clubs, while large gyms are far fewer, in fact they represent only 12% of the offer. The remaining percentage is made up of micro gyms, i.e. clubs where you can practice individual disciplines such as yoga and pilates. According to the most recent census by Unioncamere, there are 8.44 facilities per 100,000 inhabitants in the Italian regions. The region where, in absolute terms, there are the most facilities is Lombardy with 1,072 gyms, a fifth of the Italian total. But in proportion to the inhabitants, Abruzzo is in first place, followed by the Marches. In Milan, the average cost for a month of gym is €51.65, while in Rome it rises to €55.10. In the world, the countries with more gym members than inhabitants are Norway and Sweden, followed by the United States.
