The first mapping of the entire Italian coast (7500 kilometers) is underway, destined to affect the restoration of marine ecosystems. State-of-the-art technology is used to map the Posidonia oceanica and Cymodocea nodosa meadows. The project also includes a complete mapping of the coastal strip up to 800 meters starting from the coastline inland with optical sensors that will allow the creation of the Digital Atlas of the Seas. The mapping of deep marine habitats will also take a census of more than 70 underwater mountains, from 500 to 2,000 meters deep, investigating areas that have never been monitored and are almost completely unknown. Thanks to this project, detailed information on the morphology of the coast will be provided, allowing reliable forecasts to be made on coastal erosion phenomena and the vulnerability of coasts in the event of extreme events such as storm surges and floods.
