The Court of Padua dismissed the appeals asking the removal of the non-biological mother's name from the birth certificate, ruling that "the procedure used" to oppose the second mother's registration was "inapplicable." Retaining the surname, which was the defensive line, is a "distinctive sign of personal identity". In other words, the identities of the children in two-mother households were jeopardized. These will now be able to have two surnames: that of the "biological" mother and that of the "intentional" mother.
