According to the most recent WHO study (dated April 2023), one in every six people worldwide will experience infertility at some point in their lives, accounting for approximately 17.5% of the adult population, with little variation in prevalence across regions, estimated at 17.8% in high-income countries and 16.5% in low- and middle-income countries. The findings suggest that the infertility rate in Europe, which includes Italy, was 16.5%, or almost one in every six. In particular, the National Registry of Medically Assisted Procreation reports the following percentages on couple infertility in Italy: male infertility for 29.3%; female infertility for 37.1%; infertility for both men and women for 17.6%; idiopathic infertility, i.e. without identifiable causes, for 15.1%; and congenital anomalies for 0.9%.
