According to statistics collected by Edmo (the independent observatory sponsored by the EU Commission that brings together people who perform fact checking) in January, out of 222 confirmed stories, in Italy 6.7% of fake news used AI material, compared to 4% across Europe. In December, according to the IDMO, the Italian division of Edmo, the top stories of misinformation concentrated on the battle between Israel and Hamas (15%), compared to an EU average of 11%, the war against Ukraine (10%), and pandemics (10.3%). Only one-third of Italian newspaper readers had access to fact-checking, which was clearly identified and validated.
