Inflation cancels out the recovery of Italians' salaries, bringing them back to pre-pandemic levels in real terms, resulting in a loss of more over 6 billion euros compared to 2019. This is the result of calculations on household earnings and employment conducted by CER and the Confesercenti Economic Office using accessible Istat data, four years after the lockdown was announced on March 9, 2020. Between 2019 and 2023, the average income of Italian households increased from slightly more than €38,300 to more than €43,800 per year. A more than 5,500-euro boost that, unfortunately, is only virtual because it is largely cancelled out by price increases: net of inflation, the average real income per family in 2023 is still 254 euros (-0.7%) lower than it was in 2019.
