The Court of Vicenza has deemed as inadmissible the plea bargain request by the defense of Wolfgang Rieke, the German truck driver who in November 2022 ran over and killed cycling champion Davide Rebellin without stopping to render aid. The case against the hit-and-run driver has thus opened, and the trial will also begin on May 27. "We feared that the panel, after granting house arrest to the defendant, might also agree to a plea bargain," said Carlo Rebellin, brother of the unfortunate rider. "It was a surprise and we can only be satisfied that the judges decided to go ahead and send Rieke to trial. I thank both the Public Prosecutor's Office and the Tribunal for their work". Carlo Rebellin himself was then keen to clarify the family's position: "We do not want revenge, but justice for Davide. A trial we believe is the right forum to ascertain the facts and arrive at a sentence that is as congruous as possible to the defendant's responsibilities, even if Davide will not come back”.
