From Egyptian potatoes to Putin's wheat, 2023 set an all-time record for foreign food arrivals, which reached a record 65 billion euros, up 5% from the previous year. This is according to data from ISTAT, the Italian Statistical Institute, on the foreign trade of Italian regions. The symbolic product of this trend is undoubtedly wheat. In Italy in 2023, grain imports from Canada more than doubled - totaling well over 1 billion kilograms. But while the maple country remains the top supplier, the exploit that marked 2023 is that of Russian and Turkish wheat increased by +1004% and +812%, respectively, according to an analysis published by Centro Studi Divulga.
