"On March 17, we commemorate the 163rd anniversary of our country's founding, and the conflicts that followed throughout the Risorgimento would have eventually brought it together. The Day of National Unity, the Constitution, the Anthem, and the Flag encapsulate the values of independence, popular sovereignty, freedom, justice, and peace, which have been combined over a century and a half of long and arduous route and are perfectly summarized in the Republican Constitution". Sergio Mattarella, President of the Republic, spoke on the Day of National Unity, the Constitution, the Anthem, and the Flag, which was celebrated yesterday. "Generous generations were the protagonists of our being Italy, right up to those who, without hesitation, chose the cause of liberation during WWII. And, today, the Constitution, the Anthem of the Italians, and the Tricolor represent the Italian Republic", said the Head of State. The truer the notion of our union, the more opportunities the Italian people will have in the future. Institutions are first and foremost called to be models of collaboration and responsibility, of solidarity in the pursuit of the common good. The winds of independence and freedom that swept through Europe in previous centuries, driven by aspirations for democracy and social fairness, found a framework of guarantee in the road of European integration". "Today," Mattarella added in his remarks, "we are facing challenges not unlike those that were faced then". "The developing and horrible state of instability, marked by increasingly deadly aggressions, in both Ukraine and the Middle East, threatens to involve the entire world community. These wars must end in order to reestablish respect for human rights and international law and to ensure the life of all people," concluded the President of the Republic.
