During the year 2023, all measurement points in Italy complied with the annual limit values for PM10 atmospheric particulate matter and 311 out of 312 for PM2.5, with an approximate 13% decrease in average for the latter compared to the ten-year average from 2013 to 2022. This is what the National System for the Protection of the Environment Snpa - made up of the Higher Institute for Environmental Protection and Research (Ispra) and the Environmental Agencies of Regions and Autonomous Provinces -certifies in its "Air Quality Report in Italy 2023". The daily limit value of PM10 was likewise observed in 89% of the monitoring stations, with the exceptions focused mostly in the north-east section of the Po basin (47 exceedances out of 63), a portion of the basin north of Vesuvius, and the province of Frosinone. The yearly value of nitrogen dioxide is within the limits in practically all monitoring stations (98%) in 2023, representing a 19% drop from the 2013-2022 decade. Exceedances occur in stations with high traffic volumes, like Turin, Milan, Brescia, Genoa, Bologna, Florence, Rome, Naples, Catania, and Palermo.
