Joe Barone did not make it. The Fiorentina general manager died yesterday at the age of 57. He had been in intensive care at the San Raffaele hospital in Milan since Sunday evening after becoming ill at the hotel before the (postponed) match against Atalanta. His family stands by his side, including his eleven-month-old grandson, who recently arrived from the United States, his wife Camilla, and his four children, Pietro, Salvatore, Giuseppe, and Gabriella. Fiorentina president Rocco Commisso was absent, as he was expected at the bedside of his friend and manager on Wednesday. Barone, who would have been 58 today, was hooked to what is known as the "resurrection machine," a cutting-edge equipment used in the most serious instances that has saved numerous lives.
