The Court of Milan ruled in favor of Amazon in its inaugural civil litigation in Italy concerning fraudulent reviews. The victims were individuals who attempted to facilitate the publication of five-star ratings on Amazon.it. The verdict resulted in the shutdown of the fraudulent reviews website Realreviews.it. The court decided that the site owner violated unfair competition regulations, which harmed both Amazon and its consumers. The Milan court decision found that the Realreviews.it website promised potential reviewers a full refund of purchased products if they posted and supplied proof of a 5-star review. The lawsuit is part of Amazon's "broader and ongoing efforts to tackle fake reviews globally", the company explains. Amazon launched its first lawsuit against fake review brokers in 2015, and since then, it has assembled global teams of lawyers, professional investigators, and analysts to prosecute fake review brokers through legal channels, thereby putting an end to the practice.
