The twenty-ninth Day of Remembrance and Commitment in Memory of the Innocent Victims of the Mafia, established by the Libera Association in 1996 and officially acknowledged by the State with Law 20 on March 8, 2017, was observed yesterday. This year, Libera has chosen Rome to hold the event in honor of the 1,081 people killed by the mafia from 1861 to the present. "The 'National Day of Remembrance and Commitment in Memory of the Victims of the Mafias' is a major anniversary for the national community, having originated in civil society and grown as a result of the principles it represents. A day to highlight the dedication to liberate communities and territories from mafias, to combat the indifference and resignation that always favor criminal organizations", stated President Sergio Mattarella. "When we defend the dignity of being free citizens, when we rebel against violence and injustice, when we do not look the other way in the face of abuse, we contribute to the fight against mafias", he said. "Institutions," he said, "are called to do their job to combat criminal groups at all levels, and the action of people and social forces is critical to build and spread the culture of legality and freedom. The mafias are a tremendous burden for Italy, as they are involved in all unlawful activities of criminal trade. The Day reminds us that fighting mafias is the responsibility and duty of everyone who loves the Republic and wants to improve its future".
