The best pesto in the world is that of Mattia Bassi of Genoa, 56, 3 children, a naval engineer who lives in the Acquasanta Heights in western Genoa. In the 10th edition of the Genoa Pesto World Championship, he beat out 100 competitors from all over the world, who competed in the Ligurian capital on March 23 to be then judged by 30 experts, gourmet opinion leaders selected nationwide. Also honored were the oldest competitor, 90-year-old Maria Carbone, from Davagna, a small town in the Genoa hinterland, and competitor Kelly Rocha from further afield who won an elimination race of the Championship following the Ocean Race stages in Itajaì, in southern Brazil, 9,846 kilometers from Genoa.
