At the port of Livorno, a digital system is being created that will allow ships to approach and moor even without captains or crew. The project is dubbed "5G Mass." The level of interest is really high. MarketsandMarket forecasts that the Mass - Maritime Autonomous Surface Ship - market will grow from $3.9 billion in 2022 to $8.2 billion in 2030. The reasons are twofold: first, to urgently address serious climate change challenges, and second, to reduce maritime accidents caused by human error. The Coast Guard collaborated with the European Space Agency to improve the use of space applications. This resulted in support for the development of the 5G Mass initiative. During the test phase, 100 gigabytes of multimedia and telemetry data were handled so far. The technological task is clear: to extend - initially in Livorno, then nationally - the automated systems already in use in commodities handling to pilotage, mooring, and maneuvering services in the port region, which have previously been carried out entirely by humans.
