Istat takes a picture of the Italian economy's health, and the result is a brutal portrait. According to early projections of absolute poverty for the year 2023, the incidence of absolute poverty is 8.5% among households (8.3% in 2022) and 9.8% among people (9.7% in 2022), indicating significant stability in comparison to 2022. A cumulative count of approximately 5,752,000 individuals comprises over 2,234,000 families. More concerning is the number for kids: in 2023, the incidence of individual absolute poverty among minors is 14% (equivalent to 1.3 million), the highest value in the historical record since 2014. The frequency of absolute family poverty by breakdown is highest in the South (10.3%, involving 866 thousand families), followed by the North (8.0%, one million families) and the Centre (6.8%, 365 thousand families).
