Fincantieri of Italy and Saipem have agreed to collaborate on underwater robotics projects. The goal is to monitor and control important underwater infrastructure, including gas pipelines and telecommunications networks. The agreement between the shipbuilding group and the engineering group Saipem, which is active in the construction of infrastructures for the onshore and offshore energy sector, focuses on autonomous submarines and their integration with surface and underwater units, with the goal of allowing the two companies to participate in programs relevant to the Italian and international markets. The collaboration comprises the integration of Fincantieri-built surface ships and submarines with Sonsub's "Hydrone" drone development program, Saipem's center of excellence for underwater technology and solutions. Fincantieri and Saipem signed a Memorandum of Understanding at Palazzo Marina, the headquarters of the Italian Navy's General Staff, to serve as a reference for the underwater dimension, which is becoming increasingly important in the current geopolitical context.
