A new storm threatens to hit Sandro Tonali. The English Football Association has disclosed that the Newcastle midfielder is accused of misconduct in connection with alleged violations of federal betting rules. The English association alleges that the former AC Milan player placed several bets on soccer (50 to be precise, between August 12 and October 12, 2023) even after his move to the Premier League in early July. Tonali, for the bets placed in Italy, had already plea-bargained with the FIGC for an 18-month sentence, including 10 months of disqualification and eight alternative prescriptions. The Italian player now faces further disqualification. Already in the days immediately following the sentence imposed on him by the Italian Football Federation, and subsequently ratified by FIFA, the FA had opened an investigation to ensure that Tonali's behaviors had not continued at Newcastle. The dates given in the statement announcing the charges against Tonali are not coincidental: in fact, August 12 coincides with the first day of the Premier League, while October 12 is the day on which Tonali, along with Zaniolo, had been forced to leave the national team's training camp following rumors about their involvement in the betting ring.
