A pedestrian ring shaped like a great boulevard, complete with green spaces, cycle routes, and terraces overlooking the Imperial Forums. In Rome, the area between the Colosseum, Palatine Hill, Caracalla Baths, and Capitoline Hill is about to undergo a transformation. The Roman architectural and urban planning studio Labics, led by Maria Claudia Clemente and Francesco Isidori, won the international competition for the Forums' "New Archaeological Walk" announced in October. The idea features a huge pedestrian ring that follows in the footsteps of the late nineteenth-century Promenade, connecting the central archeological area to the modern city. The renovated Promenade is the first step in a larger program to transform Rome's Monumental Archaeological Center. "We want to modernize one of the most important areas in the world, safeguarding the value of history and making it more usable and livable for Romans and tourists," said Roberto Gualtieri, the city's mayor. Work will begin in September.
