Italian sports talent Stefano Cherchi, who was the victim of an accident in the race staged at Thoroughbred Park Racecourse in Kentucky on March 20, died at just 23. Originally from Mores, the Sardinian jockey was leading in a competition when he was involved in a fall in which he hit his head, sustaining injuries immediately deemed very serious. Rising to headlines in Britain for his successes, Cherchi was immediately transported to hospital in Canberra, where he was joined by his parents and one of his sisters. Another horse racing phenom, Andrea Atzeni, a teacher and close friend of his, also arrived at his bedside, but the Italian jockey failed to come out of his coma, passing away yesterday morning.
