The M&A market begins 2024 with a solid comeback. In fact, in the first three months of 2024, about €14.6 billion in transactions were recorded in Italy (+55.2% compared to the first quarter of 2023), accounting for more than 40% of the total value recorded in 2023 (equivalent to €35.1 billion). The closure of some significant transactions valued at more than one billion dollars largely impacted the outcome. Volumes, on the other hand, are slowing: after a record three-year period in terms of transaction volume, which has always been around 1200 per year, 2024 has started more conservatively, with only 272 deals in the first three months (-24.4% less than the first quarter of 2023). It should be noted, however, that this figure is still greater than that reported in the first three months of the years preceding 2020. "We are witnessing," says Max Fiani, partner at KPMG and report editor, "a favorable first quarter for Italian M&A, with one of the best starts in the last ten years, primarily due to the contribution of the energy, industrial, and financial services sectors".
