"Do we also want to introduce direct election of the President of the Republic? I am not against it”. This was said yesterday by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni as a guest on Rai1's "Porta a Porta" TV program, speaking about the premierate. The Prime Minister challenged those who attribute to her reform a downsizing of the Quirinal Palace then however, in the same statement, she sent a cutting message: "What I wanted is a reform that does not question the authoritativeness and unity that the Head of State guarantees but it changes a lot," she added, "when you have a direct mandate from the citizens, you answer to the citizens. When you have a mandate that comes from the parties you answer to them". She then concluded with the phrase sounding like an opening for further constitutional reform, "Do we want to introduce direct election of the President of the Republic as well? I am not against that".
