Health spending in Italy is set to drop systematically and steadily in the coming years: while in 2022 health weighed 6.7% of GDP on the state budget, this percentage dropped to 6.6% in 2023 and will stand at 6.2% both this year and the following year, before falling further to 6.1% in 2026. In absolute terms, however, it ranges from €131 billion in 2022 to €134 billion in 2023; this year the final figure is expected to be down to around €133 billion, while it is expected to rise to €136 billion in 2025 and nearly €139 billion in 2026. This is the finding of an analysis by the Unimpresa Study Center, according to which, in general, an overall slimming down is expected for the entire public budget, so much so that total spending will fall below 50% of GDP in 2026: from 56.1% in 2022 to 53% in 2023, and from 50.6% in 2024 to 50.3% in 2025.
