"The earthquake 15 years ago, on the night of April 5-6, devastated L'Aquila and the surrounding area, snatching more than 300 people from their lives. The destruction swept over the historic center, the suburbs, and neighboring villages, leaving the entire national community astonished and shocked. The country managed to react, mobilizing all its energies, while the inhabitants of the area affected by the earthquake found the strength to begin rebuilding homes, workplaces, schools, to recover - as much as possible - artistic beauty. The path of rebirth of that land has become an achievement and a common civic heritage". These were the words of the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella on the anniversary of the earthquake that devastated Abruzzo in 2009. "The full reconstruction of the city and boroughs is a duty and a commitment to be continued. For every social component, first and foremost for the institutions, just as such is the work of reconnecting the social fabric. It is a challenge that concerns Abruzzo, its inland areas and, at the same time, it constitutes a passage to innovate and offer new generations the possibility of realizing their projects in the security of an environment that knows how to make territories wounded, or at risk due to the unpredictability of nature, places of new opportunities. The memory of such tragic events must therefore become a warning and commitment for the whole country, so that the value of human life and the integrity of Communities is never neglected".
