"On the occasion of the end of the month of Ramadan, I extend cordial greetings to my fellow citizens and guests who profess the Islamic faith in Italy." Sergio Mattarella, the President of the Republic, said this in a statement released yesterday. "The Constitution reminds us that all religious confessions are free before the law, as long as they do not conflict with the Italian legal system," said the Head of State. "The United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights recognizes religious freedom as a foundation of cohabitation. The promotion of mutual respect amongst faiths and cultures, which is an important component of our community's social cohesiveness, necessitates the exercise of shared responsibility for the greater good. This year's Ramadan coincided with a moment of worry about the pain and loss that innocent civilians face around the world, notably in the Middle East. Religions' message of peace is limitless, and we must remember it, especially while guiding young people through mutual understanding education. I extend my warmest wishes for a happy and peaceful Eid al Fitr to all ladies and men who practice Islam in Italy".
