Castelfiorentino player Mattia Giani, 26, died at the Careggi hospital in Florence, after falling ill on Sunday on the field of the municipal stadium of Campi Bisenzio, in the same Tuscan capital, during the Eccellenza championship match against Lanciotto Campi. Giani had suffered a cardiac arrest and collapsed to the ground, losing consciousness. The first to intervene was one of the staff members of the Castelfiorentino, who performed cardiac massage. The striker originally from Ponte a Egola (in the province of Pisa) was then rescued by 118 medics who arrived on the scene and taken to the Florentine polyclinic in red code. The illness occurred about 15 minutes before the start of the match, which was suspended.
