With almost 197 million passengers, 20% more than in 2022, traffic in Italy has exceeded pre-Covid levels, and the three-year deficit has been closed. The most pertinent findings of the airport traffic analysis conducted by ENAC in 2023 and made available on its website are presented here. In particular, in 2023, 197,128,729 passengers used commercial air transport services transiting through Italian airports from domestic and international routes, a 20% increase over 2022. Rome Fiumicino Airport has been certified as the number one airport for passenger traffic, with around 40.3 million passengers and a 20.4% market share. Domestic traffic, with 68.6 million passengers (35% of total passenger traffic), increased by 6% compared to 2022. Rome Fiumicino remains the leading airport in terms of traffic volume, accounting for 13% of total passengers, or over 9 million. International traffic increased by 28% over the previous year, reaching 128.5 million passengers (65% of total passenger traffic). The European Union has the most traffic, with Spain accounting for 14% (equivalent to 18 million passengers) with the main route being Rome Fiumicino - Madrid Barajas.
