In 2023, life expectancy in Italy was 83.1 years and is on the rise compared to 2022 (82.3), almost catching up with the 2019 level (83.2 years). Men with 81.1 years of expected life expectancy return to the same level as in 2019, while women (85.2 years) are still 0.2 years away (85.4 in 2019). This is according to the 11th edition of the ISTAT BES Report on Equitable and Sustainable Wellbeing. Healthy life expectancy in 2023 is 59.2 years, down from 60.1 years in 2022. This reduction brought the indicator almost back to the 2019 level (58.6 years), scaling back the abnormal increase that occurred between 2020 and 2022 due to the subjective component, as a result of the more widespread perception of good health conditions in times of pandemic. It is 10.6 years the average expected life expectancy without limitations at age 65, up from the 10 years recorded in both 2022 and 2019. The mental health indicator assumes a score of 68.7 in 2023, a similar value as in 2022 (69.0). The measure also remains stable compared to 2019 (68.4), but against this relative stability, a worrying deterioration in psychological well-being has been observed since 2020, especially among younger people, particularly girls.
