In the last half century, an agricultural area the size of Austria has vanished in Italy as a result of overbuilding and land consumption, which have deprived Italy of fertile land. According to a Coldiretti examination of ISTAT statistics, in 1970 the entire agricultural land was over 250 thousand square kilometers, equal to 83% of the whole of Italy, but today it has been reduced to less than 165 thousand, or 55%.
