As part of global efforts toward decarbonization, Italy marked in 2023 the most significant cut in greenhouse gas emissions ever recorded in an economic growth phase (thus excluding the years of the 2008-2009 financial crisis and pandemic). With a decrease of 27 million tons, or -6.5% from the previous year, the country could get back on trajectory to meet the European 2030 targets. Achieving them would require cutting "only" 20 million tons of greenhouse gases each year. This is what emerges from the fifth edition of the "10 Key Trends on Climate" report prepared by Italy for Climate and published on International Earth Day, providing a summary representation of the relevant climate and energy trends in Italy in the year just ended.
