After the pandemic fracture, the path to normality recovery at the Italian business registry continues. Between January and March, the balance between business openings and closures stood at -10,951, which is higher than in the same quarter of the last three years but still well below the average of the last decade (-14 thousand businesses). The balance for the quarter reflects, on the one hand, an acceleration in cancellations (117,832 or 7.9% more than in the same period of 2023) and, on the other hand, moderate growth in registrations (106,881, 5% more than the previous year). Overall, however, both flows of business openings and closures still remain below the average of the pre-pandemic period. In assessing the data for the first quarter of the year, it is important to consider that, historically, this period frequently registers negative balances, mainly due to the concentration at the end of the year of a high number of business closures. This is a phenomenon of a technical-administrative nature that extends its effects on chamber archives even in the first weeks of the new year, affecting the first quarter figure. The balance of the start of the year had the greatest impact especially on sole proprietorships, which recorded a decrease of 15,755 compared to the end of December (-0.52%).
