In Italy, about 60 thousand people have died from asbestos-related diseases in the last 10 years. In 2023, the National Asbestos Observatory surveyed about 2 thousand cases of mesothelioma, with a mortality rate, compared to the previous 5 years, of about 93% of cases. In the same year, there were about 4 thousand new lung cancer diagnoses from asbestos exposure (net of smoking and other carcinogens), with an estimated survival rate (at 5 years) of 12% for a calculation of about 3,500 deaths. The data were released on the occasion of World Asbestos Victims Day, which is celebrated on April 28.
