Marcell Jacobs' Olympic season began with a 10.11 in Jacksonville, Florida, propelled by a 0.9 tailwind. The Italian sprinter is second in the East Coast Relays event, on the track where he trains at Hodges Stadium, trailing Canadian Andre De Grasse by a whisker (three thousandths) with the same time of 10.11. Third place went to American Trayvon Bromell (10.14), fourth to Chinese Xie Zhenye (10.14), fifth to Japanese Hakim Sani Brown (10.15), and sixth to Jamaican Ryiem Forde (10.20). Following the women's 100m, which was hindered by opposing winds, a decision was made to utilize the backward-orienting straight, which would be aided by the wind. Jacobs managed to improve his start, but in the launched phase he let himself go and recovered the disadvantage on De Grasse and nearly overtook him. Jacobs, who was supported in the spectators by his wife Nicole and children Anthony and Meghan, was making his first competitive appearance since joining coach Rana Reider's squad in Florida, nearly eight months after his last race in the 100 meters in Zagreb in September.
