Giorgia Meloni has formally confirmed her candidacy in the European elections. The prime minister did so yesterday during her concluding statement at the Fratelli d'Italia thematic meeting in Pescara. "I have decided to take the field to lead the lists of Fratelli d'Italia in all electoral districts, if I survive," she was quoted as saying. "I will not take a single minute away from government activity to campaign: my task is to solve the problems of the nation and I intend to do this also in the election campaign". "Since I am not the secretary of the Democratic Party," the prime minister said with a giggle "I trust that the party will do its best to give me a hand". "I ask the Italians to write my name, but only my first name" during the European elections. "I am proud that the majority of the citizens who approach me refer to me as Giorgia. For years, I was derided for my working-class roots; they called me a 'fisherman', 'borgatara' ... because they were refined... But I am proud to be a person of the people," the prime minister stated. "If you want to show that you still believe in me, write Giorgia on the card, because I am and will always be one of you. Power will not transform me, and the palace will not isolate me. I need to know once more that it's worthwhile," she said.
