"Prison is a terrible reality, and issues such as overcrowding, a lack of facilities and resources, and incidents of violence cause a great deal of misery. However, it can also become a place of rebirth, both moral and material, in which the dignity of men and women is not 'put in isolation', but promoted through mutual respect and the care of talents and abilities that may have remained dormant or imprisoned by life's events, but can re-emerge for the good of all and deserve attention and trust. Nobody takes away a person's dignity". Pope Francis stated this in Venice yesterday after visiting with detainees from the Giudecca Women's Detention House. "It is critical that the prison system provide prisoners with tools and spaces for human growth, spiritual, cultural, and professional development, thereby creating the conditions for their healthy reintegration."Please do not 'isolate dignity'; instead, open up new possibilities", the Pontiff urged.
