In recent weeks, there has been much discussion regarding World Athletics, the International Athletics Federation's decision to award cash prizes to Olympic gold winners. Only the gold medal winners will be given in Paris 2024 (46 thousand euros, which will be divided in the case of the relays), while silver and bronze medalists will be paid in Los Angeles 2028, but the amount is unknown. However, this is not new for Italy. CONI, the Italian Olympic Committee, will provide 180,000 euros (gross) to the gold medal winners, 90,000 euros to the silver medalists, and 45,000 euros to the bronze medalists at the Paris Games. These are the same values as in Tokyo and will be awarded to all individual winners. For example, if a volleyball or basketball team wins a medal, all players will get the prize. CONI paid just under 7 million euros to pay for Italy's 40 medals (the most ever won) at the previous Olympics in Japan. CONI's awards are relatively large when compared to those of other countries' Olympic committees: for example, the United States paid 30,000 euros for gold medals in Tokyo, whereas France will pay 80,000 euros to competition winners in Paris.
