The king of Carloforte tuna fishing, capable of promoting the island of San Pietro and, by rebound, all of Sardinia internationally, has died at just 58 years old. Ever since Luigi Biggio was a young boy, who was involved in restoring boats in the factory of his brother Ettore, Portoscuso's undisputed rais. Then he started his "career", first as a simple tuna fisher and, later, by becoming vice rais and rais. He had long been battling an illness that, in the end, left him no chance. He ended up in the international limelight for his leadership of the annual slaughters in the Carloforte sea, succeeding in bringing tuna and Tabarkan culture beyond San Pietro. "Rais for over twenty seasons, true leader of his crew, constant point of reference in the seething sea of the mattanza," are the words with which Mayor Stefano Rombi remembers him on his Facebook page, “All of Carloforte embraces Carloforte Tonnare, the family and friends of Luigi Biggio who has unfortunately left us”. Grief also envelops the Carloforte restaurant world in Cagliari. "Hello my friend, have a good trip among your tuna," says Luigi Pomata. "I am sorry because he was our rais for so many years, I am close to all his relatives in this time of sorrow," adds Raffaele Mameli.
