In 2023, the 5.1 million foreign citizens residing in Italy saved 8.178 billion euros and returned it back to their home countries. The Leone Moressa Foundation's findings show a 5.5% decline in monetary transfers compared to 2022, but only for remittances sent through formal channels. These flows do not represent the complete amount of money sent abroad by immigrants, as cash might also arrive at their destination as a result of travels or trusted individuals, or through other methods that official surveys cannot track. If "informal" remittances are included, the Leone Moressa Foundation estimates that Italy's total flow of money transferred to overseas nations in 2023 might be between 9.4 and 11.9 billion euros. The countries with the greatest remittances were Bangladesh (1.16 billion, 14.3% of total), Pakistan (681 million), and the Philippines (600 million). The average monthly remittance value per capita is €133. With 1.8 billion (22.6% of the total) remittances, Lombardy is the first region of departure, followed by Lazio (1.2 billion) and Emilia-Romagna (849 million). Nearly a quarter of all money transfers from Italy come from Rome (one billion) and Milan (928 million).
