Many countries have internal gaps, with significant economic and social disparities between different areas; nevertheless, only Italy's development gaps have worsened over time, rather than improving. Demopolis' research reveals that national averages no longer make sense. When faced with the requirement to vote on public services in their region, 70% of northerners support them, while 61% of southerners oppose them. There are staggering disparities, particularly in health care. Only in one case there seems to be common agreement; and that is the opinion that the European-funded National Recovery Plan is turning out to be a huge, squandered opportunity: 16% of citizens polled by Demopolis believe so, with minor differences between north and south. Differences resurface when it comes to expressing an opinion on differentiated autonomy. Two-thirds of respondents in the north believe the change to have a favorable impact, compared to 38% in Central Italy and only 11% in the South.
