The Pope received an eco-compactor for plastic recycling at the end of the General Audience. The gift's authors are the managers of Corepla, the National Consortium for the Collection, Recycling, and Recovery of Plastic Packaging, which has quintupled recycling in 25 years, increasing it from 228,000 to over 1,050,000 tons per year. Packaging that cannot currently be recycled has also been retrieved. In practice, 513,329 tons of material were used to generate energy rather than fossil fuels. The machine handed to Pope Francis will be installed in one of the most popular tourists and religious sites in Vatican City, preventing plastic pollution and executing an essential effort to boost recycling awareness among locals and tourists. In terms of plastic package management, Italy stands out among the European Union's member countries. The EU plans to recycle 90% of PET bottles by 2029, and Italy has already exceeded 70%.
