The United States has announced that it will implement 100% tariffs to block the shipment of electric automobiles from Beijing. However, Carlos Tavares, CEO of Stellantis, disagrees. While conceding that "competition with Chinese car manufacturers in the European market will be fierce, especially with regard to electric, and may lead to significant consequences", Tavares describes tariffs on Asian automobiles imported into Europe and the United States as a "trap". Speaking to Reuters Events Automotive Europe, he stated: "It is a path that will not allow Western automakers to avoid the restructuring required to meet the challenge. Tariffs would also raise inflation in the regions where they were imposed, thereby impacting sales and output. The pricing war with Chinese competitors will be fierce: they have a 30% cost advantage, and there may be societal implications".
