Microsoft will have to pay almost 729 thousand euros to the Gedi publishing group (which owns the newspapers La Repubblica and La Stampa) for the use of its newspapers' journalistic publications via its search engine Bing. This was determined by the Authority for Communications Guarantees (Agcom). The total amount owed is divided into two parts: $364,369 (€335,330) for 2021 and $427,593 (€393,510) for 2022. "Strengthened by this decision established by the Authority, we now intend to implement it, while opening specific negotiations with the remaining platforms operating on the Italian market", stated Maurizio Scanavino, the CEO of Gedi. Yesterday, in a note, the Gedi group also reiterated that, "despite the fact that the Authority has applied methods of calculating fair compensation different from those proposed by the group, thus establishing an amount lower than that requested, Gedi welcomes the decision".
