The used car market closed the first half of 2024 with an 8.9% increase in ownership changes. A figure that confirms Italians' preference for used cars, which is also motivated by a desire to save money. Obviously, diesel (44.6%) and petrol (36.6%) outperform electric, which has a share of 0.7%, and with hybrids beginning to be appreciated (6.8%). Italians on average expect a spending budget of €16,000, down from €19,000 at the end of 2023, but in line with the trend in average prices, which fell by -4.3% compared to the same period the previous year. The average price of a used vehicle in the first half of 2024 was €21,900, while it was €22,500 in the first half of 2023 and €15,700 in the same period of 2019. The second-hand market is important for encouraging the renewal of the circulating fleet: those looking for a used car would replace their current vehicle, which is on average close to 13 years old (46% are 15 years old or older), with one that is about 7-8 years old. Users ranked active safety devices first among essential functions or accessories, with up to 75% indicating this. This is followed by the infotainment system (navigator, audio system, etc.), which was reported by 39%, and automatic transmission (36%). The Volkswagen Golf is the most popular model overall, with the Mercedes-Benz A-Class coming in second, followed by the Fiat Panda, Fiat 500, and the Audi A3. However, if we only consider hybrid and electric vehicles, we find the Audi A6 among the former and the Tesla Model 3 among the latter.
