The Italian right has praised German Chancellor Olaf Scholz's remarks on immigration following the attack in Solingen on August 23, in which three people were killed in an attack claimed by ISIS and carried out by 26-year-old Syrian refugee Issa al Hasan. On August 26, in fact, the German leader paid a visit to the town, vowing a tough stance on immigration, including tighter gun laws and a firmer commitment to deporting irregular migrants. The new intransigent posture of Germany's chancellor has so earned backing from the Italian right, particularly Fratelli d'Italia, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's party. Carlo Fidanza, the head of the Fratelli d'Italia - ECR delegation in the European Parliament, commented on social media with satisfaction: "While in Germany, after the attack claimed by ISIS, the Social Democrat Chancellor Scholz finally announces a clampdown on illegal immigrants, in Italy the left continues to believe in immigrationist fairy tales in order to go against Giorgia Meloni". Or, as FdI MP and head of the Immigration Department Sara Kelany stated, "The German government's clampdown on immigration following the Islamist attack in Solingen is the result of pragmatism. The problem of Islamic separatism and pockets of radicalization affects all of Europe. From France, which had to pass a law against religious separatism, to Germany, there is a growing recognition that indiscriminate and unregulated immigration poses a security risk to citizens. Today, the Meloni government's model is followed by the governments of European states with progressive impetus; however, the Italian left refuses to concede to the evidence: irregular immigration must be vigorously combated". Senator Michele Barcaiuolo, group leader of Fratelli d'Italia in the Defense Committee, also criticized the Democratic Party, saying, "The indiscriminate entrance of illegal immigrants is a problem of public order. The current attack in Germany is a wake-up call that also concerns German socialists; only in Italy does the left continue to turn a blind eye to the issue". According to Raffaele Speranzon, deputy vice-president of Giorgia Meloni's party senators, "the clampdown announced by German Chancellor Scholz against illegal immigration shows that even the left in Europe has finally realized that indiscriminate entries represent a security problem. The only ones who are unaware of this are Italian leftists, obtusely blinded by their love of damaging immigrationist policies and hostile toward the Meloni government, which instead defends national boundaries and reduces the number of illegal incursions", he stated. As a result, the Italian right feels strongly about this subject, which is becoming a cross-cutting topic in many European countries.
