The Italian tennis player Jannik Sinner has advanced to the quarterfinals of the US Open tournament with a victory over Tommy Paul, who is ranked 14th. After defeating the American 7-6 7-6 6-1 at home, the twenty-three-year-old South Tyrolean will face Russian Daniil Medvedev, who has already defeated him in the quarterfinals of the Wimbledon tournament and secured his sole Grand Slam victory at the US Open in 2021. The two have met off 12 times in their careers, with the Russian leading 7-5. "It will be a very tough match, both physically and mentally, and a good challenge", said the world number one. While waiting for the match, Sinner took pride in reaching the quarterfinals of all Slams this year, increasing his lead over the current number two, German Alexander Zverev. Sinner's triumphs at the US Open follow his withdrawal from the Olympics owing to health issues, as well as the controversy sparked by the positive results of two doping tests. On August 20, the ITIA (International Tennis Integrity Agency) conveyed the results of the tests and the decision not to disqualify him, citing the absence of malice and the insignificant quantity of the substance discovered during the investigations and subsequent trial. A decision that has irritated some tennis players, like Australian Kyrgios, who on social media branded the situation "stupid" and said that "They forced you to undergo two tests with a prohibited (steroid) substance... You should stay out for two years. Your performance has improved". Rafa Nadal stepped in to defend the Italian, saying in a recent interview: "I know Sinner and I don't think he wanted to engage in drug use. Justice is justice, and I don't believe we should appreciate it only when it is resolved in our preferred manner".
